Before starting at Vetlife, Garth travelled all over the world with the highlight working on a Cattle, Horse and Buffalo ranch in South Dakota. Garth started in the Ashburton clinic in January 2009 with the aim to build a large knowledge base in ruminant nutrition and pass that onto Vetlife clients. Garth is practically minded and enjoys working directly with the farmer.

The weather outside has got a lot colder which makes going to get the mail that little bit less enticing. This is the same for our pets.

Around this time of year we start to seee more cats with bladder problems. For those of you who have cats who like the natural litter outside when it gets colder they tend to go out less. This means that the bladder can get very full before they can no longer hold on and have to go outside.

Holding on leads to large amounts of urine in the bladder which can help the formation of crystals in the bladder. These crystals irriate the bladder wall and can cause infections and blockages.

Blockages are more common in male cats but crystals can occur in both male and female cats. If you notice your cat is straining to pee, is peeing more, is licking their back end excessively or has blood in their urine then call us as soon as possbile.

To help avoid this problem make sure your cats have access to a litter tray in a warm, quiet area of the house. Ideally the litter should be changed or at least cleaned daily. Even if you think your cat won’t use it show it to them as a frosty morning may quickly make them change their mind!

If you are worried your cat may be having urination problems of have any questions about how you can help your cat feel free to call us.

The North Otago RSPCA is shifting to a new premises behind the Vetlife building.

Committee member Kay King said the organization had been forced to move, as the current Stuart Street building was put on the market at an unaffordable price. The organization has leased part of a building owned by Vetlife and will shift into the site once some structural alterations are complete. Mrs King said the support of Vetlife had been invaluable and the RSPCA was looking forward to developing a close relationship with the veterinarian practice. Oamaru Vetlife director Ivan Holloway said the relationship between the two groups would only get stronger. “We’ve always had a good relationship with the SPCA. They’re the unsung heroes of animal welfare,” he said.
